East Africa Exchange (EAX) is a commodity exchange

Collateral Management

One of the greatest challenges that smallholder farmers face in East Africa is access to finance. This is because farmers cannot guarantee the preservation of their commodity’s quantity and quality over time, thus putting in doubt, from the bank’s perspective, their ability to repay a loan.

The electronic warehouse receipt (EWR) issued through EAX, however, is an instrument trusted by the bank for the following reasons:

  1. It is issued by EAX’s collateral manager, Collateral Management International, who guarantee the quantity and quality of physical commodity represented by the EWR.
  2. The EWR is traded through EAX's NASDAQ OMX Trading Platform, which facilitates trade across all of East Africa, and thus enables farmers to draw higher prices for their commodity by connecting to more buyers across the region.
  3. Trading on EAX is supported by our Market Data services, which allows farmers to be aware of current and historical market prices, and thus make informed decisions about the best time to sell their commodity. This mitigates the risk of farmers receiving a low price due to informational asymmetry in the market, and greatly increases the chance of full loan repayment.
  4. EAX works with partner financing banks and supporting organizations who share our aim of providing access to finance for smallholder farmers across East Africa.
